Since St. John’s is an amazing city to check out a wide range of music genres, I thought it a shame to just stick to real estate facts and opinions when we have so much more to offer.

Last Friday night I listened to a duo that I definitely thought was worth a mention, Karla Pilgrim * and Jackie Sullivan. They play at Bridie Malloy’s on George Street every Friday from 7 – 10 PM.

I’ve seen Jackie perform solo before, and had heard Karla’s name but had never heard her sing. What a treat. Incredible harmonies. Great tune selections, everything from Janis Joplin to the Dixie Chicks, with a wee bit of Irish thrown in for the die hard Irish fans. Excellent guitar work, voices that are a pure pleasure to listen to and an easy, entertaining stage presence. To top it off, there's no cover!

We had just dropped in for a bite before heading to the Fat Cat to listen to Scott Goudie. Once we’d heard a few tunes we knew we weren’t going anywhere. Since I mentioned the food, I should say it was excellent. I had the club sandwich and Glenys (my partner who manages the backend of the business) had the curried chicken salad.

If you like folk/country I'd highly recommend you check out this duo.

* Mandy Cook from The Independent, had this to say about Karla Pilgrim, “As much of a presence as she brings to the stage — which she does in spades — it’s her powerhouse voice that nails you to your seat. She belts out the big moments, softly breathes the quieter ones, and easily travels up and down the octaves.”
