Why People Love Quidi Vidi Village

It's a crisp, cold, day with a promise of spring. Maybe that's why I got to thinking about a sunny day last fall when I took a walk around Quidi Vidi Village, a once rough and tumble fishing community, that's become one of the cool places to live in the past few years.

It was the final day of the food fishery and I was on the East Coast Trail just above the community. I could see small fishing boats either coming home with their catch, or just setting out, and someone on the other side of the harbour was playing a Joan Morrissey tune. It was a wonderful Newfoundland moment that warmed this bay boy's heart.

Moments like this are common in Quidi Vidi. It's a working fishing harbour. Many of the people who live there grew up in the village and the people moving into the area appreciate the character of the place.

In terms of house styles there’s a bit of everything. Historic homes sit beside modest 60’s bungalows; architecturally designed homes share the shoreline with roughly built fishing stages.

A few other interesting facts about Quidi Vidi Village:

The Quidi Vidi Brewery, a micro brewery, is located in a restored building on the harbour.

The community sits at the head of Quidi Vidi Lake, the location of the annual Royal St. John's Regatta , the oldest sporting event in North America.

It's one of the few places in Newfoundland where people have deeded ownership of the shoreline

Last but not least, Quidi Vidi is just a ½ hour from downtown St John's - and it's a lovely walk.

Here are a few more photos that I took that day - check Flickr for many more photographs of Quidi Vidi and the surrounding area.
