Flatrock Community Profile

Northeast of St. John's, Flatrock is only 12 kilometers from the city and borders Torbay. The new Bypass Road provides easy access to major shopping districts, the city, the highway, and St. John's International Airport.

A town of about 1500 people, Flatrock is named for the waterfront rock formations which were ideal places for early inhabitants to dry salt cod. While the original settlers built homes around the harbour, these days newer developments extend inland.

Flatrock real estate offers a variety of options for buyers, from new homes to older properties. With its soccer and softball areas, tennis facilities and playgrounds, the community has something for each family member. Additional town services and volunteer organizations help make Flatrock a thriving place to live.

People living in Flatrock find it a relaxing haven from the hectic life of the city. Situated by the ocean and sheltered by cliffs, this town boasts stunning natural beauty, including the shoreline that inspired its name. The ocean-front location offers plenty of iceberg and whale watching opportunities. The area is favored by rock climbers. A wind-swept sandstone rock face sweeps along for about half a kilometre outside the community.

One local place of interest is the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, believed to be the largest religious shrine of its kind in eastern Canada. The site was blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1984.
