Community Profile: Life in Churchill Park
Churchill Park was one of the first planned subdivisions in Canada. Initially, planners decided to create a neighbourhood of family homes on generously sized lots with several parks and green spaces. Later they changed the plans to include social housing.
Churchill Park checks all the boxes when it comes to what people generally look for in a neighbourhood. It's walkable with a central shopping area, Churchill Square. The Square, as it's commonly known, houses a wide variety of professionals, family restaurants, specialty shops and a farmers market in season. It's adjacent to the university and elementary through to high schools are in easy walking distance, as is downtown St. John's. Churchill Park is home to five parks, and several walking trails, one of which is located along Rennies Mill River.
The real estate values trend east to west, with the established, affluent buyers choosing to live east of Allandale Road. Prices and sizes of homes gradually decrease west of Allandale Road with social housing comprising most of the western boundary.
Choosing to live in Churchill Park offers a number of advantages. These include bordering the university campus, a neighbourhood shopping area known as Churchill Square, beautiful walking trails, developed recreation and green spaces, walking distance to historic districts and the downtown among others.
Allendale Road divides Churchill Park into two distinct areas. The high-income residents tend to live east of the road, while homes west of Allandale Road are smaller, and less luxurious with an area of social housing on the western edge. Since it is so close to the university there are a large number of student rentals on the Western side of Churchill Park.
